Business

Starting, and fixing, a small business

I grew up behind the counter of our family clothing business and I keep its books. This is where I write down the practical side — how a shop is laid out, what the trade recommends, and which of that advice actually has evidence behind it.

How to read anything here

Retail advice is repeated a great deal and tested far less. So each note separates three things, and labels them: what published research supports, what is trade practice with no study behind it, and what is my own conclusion. Where I could not trace a widely-quoted figure to a primary source, I leave it out rather than pass it on.

What I can help with

Shop layout and display, stock and ledger habits, the day-to-day of a family retail business, and the paperwork I have been through myself.

What I will not do

Give legal, tax or accounting advice for your situation, quote figures I cannot source, or write about a trade I have not worked in as though I have.

Where it comes from

Our family runs a clothing business in Narayangarh and a garment factory in Gaidakot. I am an accounting graduate who keeps the books, not a merchandising consultant.

Changing your shop around?

If you try something here, tell me what happened — including if nothing changed. Honest results from real shops are worth more than another confident article, and I will publish what people report.
